Volunteer in The Gambia

Have you ever thought about taking a holiday where you can make a difference, or exploring a beautiful African nation, or taking a gap year or career break?
Don't just think about it, make it happen!

Join us for a unique African experience staying in our working lodge in the rural village of Madina Salam on the Atlantic coast of The Gambia.

For almost 15 years we have welcomed visiting volunteers to work with WYCE Gambia to develop and share their skills on activities and projects that benefit the community. In your spare time, we can arrange for you to see more of this beautiful and friendly country and experience its culture.

While you’re with us you will work alongside WYCE Gambia staff in the nursery and primary school, healthcare clinic, vegetable garden, bee farm, office, share your skills and experience with young people in the village or help manage projects. Volunteers in the past have helped build and refurbish the school, clinic and community buildings and facilities such as village water pumps, and they’ve helped set up small community enterprises. We will work with you to match your skills, experience and interests with needs and priorities in The Gambia. Over almost 15 years, hundreds of volunteers have brought with them a wide range of skills, initiative, and enthusiasm to help make the project a success. As well as bringing skills and energy, our visiting volunteers raise vital funds for WYCE’s core programmes – providing education and healthcare, and running livelihood projects in Madina Salam and the surrounding area.

In return you will experience life in a real Gambian village, working alongside our wonderful welcoming staff. They will make sure that you are really well looked after. You'll be picked up from the airport by Malang and Gail, Ensa the chef will cook you great meals (included in the price and suitable for the Western palate), and in your free time you can choose to go on trips and see more of the “smiling coast of Africa” – for example visit Banjul the capital, go for a fishing trip on the river, or meet some crocodiles! And the beach is only a ten minute walk away.
